Giving to Others
Drs. Ted Thachenkary and Mark Kevin, and pharmacist Lisa Leong went on a mission trip in March of 2006 to Ghana to volunteer their medical services and to bring medical supplies to the people of Ghana. In conjunction with Children of Abraham, a 20 foot container of medical supplies was assembled through donations of the generous medical community and people of Northwest Indiana.
We went to Kwahu Government Hospital in Atibie, departing on March 17th, 2006. Our trip is being facilitated by Salormey Volunteers Group.
Kwahu Government Hospital is located at Atibie, on the main road from the capital, Accra. It is a government hospital; they have a lab, maternity ward, children's ward, and two theatres for general surgery. They accept patients from all over the District ( more than 200,000 people) and surrounding areas; this means they are constantly busy and in need of doctors. The doctor to patient ratio is approx. 1:32,000.
Children of Abraham is an interfaith organization made up of the United Methodist Church of Hammond and Northwest Indiana Islamic Center of Merrillville. The organization collects discarded medical supplies from hospitals in Northwest Indiana and Chicago and donates them to hospitals in places of need around the world. The organization has thus far sent supplies to the earthquake-affected areas in Pakistan, to East Jerusalem, Iraq, Liberia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, the Gulf Coast, Ghana and Bolivia. Current and ongoing projects include preparation of goods for shipment to Kenya and Pakistan.
